Days 5 and 6
Things have really picked up this week at my internship. :) I’m having so much fun! I started my actual interning class (since I’m doing this one for school credit) and that’s a big waste of time, but the time I spend at my jobsite is sooo worth it. Today I learned how to use an online system called Cision which gives you contact information for editors and celebrity representatives. How crazy is it that I sent an email to Martha Stewart today?! Like, actual Martha Stewart. Not her company. HER.
Guys, clearly this is huge.
I also learned how to use photoshop to create mock advertisements from online publications and blogs. It’s kinda stressful and frustrating, and my computer kept freezing, but eventually I got it all figured out. Both of the things I learned today are super important tools for any publicist, so it’s nice to know that I’m learning marketable skills at Think. Interning this summer was a VERY good idea.

Days 2 and 3
My goodness! Public Relations is a lot of work, but it’s also a lot of fun. I’m really enjoying working in a place where everyone seems to love their job - even when they have to stay late. Yesterday I stayed after normal hours to assist with a press preview event for two handbag companies after spending most of the day perfecting the visual merchandising for it. (The account executives in charge of it said it looked like a Barney’s display… HELL YEAH!) It was cool to see the whole event through from beginning to end, and I got to meet editors for a couple of NYC publications. Wassup, networking? And today was kinda slow, but enjoyable nonetheless. I did some errands outside of the office and got POURED on by the rain. Of course I picked the best day to wear a shirt that gets see-through when it’s wet.
Aaaannnnd yesterday after interning I went to see Chassey perform in a Duplex cabaret! She was SO GOOD. I could not believe her vocal flexibility and the massive sound she is capable of. The rest of the people in the show weren’t great, but it was totally worth it to hear her sing. Go Chass!
Well it’s official. Summer semester has begun, and I’ll be miserable in a 4 hour statistics class Monday through Wednesday for the next six weeks. Remind me why I wanted to do this again? Other than that, I’ll be interning two days a week at Think and taking it easy where I can. Hopefully I’ll have time to get a tan at some point before July hits, because after that it’s gonna be a whirlwind of travel and beach hopping for the rest of the summer! I’m thinking this might be my favorite summer yet.
I still need to figure out a birthday plan…. but I’ve got some ideas. This will be my first birthday in five years without a certain person who has always been there to make me feel special and loved. I’m not sure how I feel about that yet. I got used to planning every year so we could be together and centering experiences around things I knew we would love. Now I’m on my own. And I won’t pretend I don’t have at least a little of the childhood anxiety that a holiday birthday gives you. Do people want to spend the day with their families instead of me? Do they already have plans? What if they would rather be somewhere else? Who will even be in town? I’ve never been a person who could just sit back and not care what they did on their birthday. As silly as it seems to some people, it really matters to me. All I want is to be surrounded by my favorite people enjoying the day together. And a sparkler on my cake. I want that too.
